The space inbetween
Ritual Art at Lanzarote (Canary Island)

Between yesterday and tomorrow there is a space in between – HERE and NOW.
The pure essence of our being. Everything exists in this very moment here and now: what has been, our wishes and hopes, and also what is to come.
My ritual performance is a declaration of love to this space and to the island with the mountains of fire, to Lanzarote.

The old quarries of Teseguite (‘Antigua Roferas’) are located exactly at the 28° latitude. Here I found the perfect place to implement my idea, because this place opens up space for interpretations about what happens on both sides of this imaginary line and how it acts as an element of unification, complementation or separation.
The sculptures made from centuries-old rock bear witness to sedimented consciousness. The seemingly static stone guardians are gently but steadily reshaped by the weather and the strong Atlantic winds. In this space between yesterday and tomorrow I stand, perceive the pulse of the earth to describe my humanity.

I approach this place silently, non-invasively. I’m here for the brief moment of my time. After my ritual I say goodbye – just as silently as I came. The beauty and transience of the moment. No detail remains evidence of my ritual, because every piece has been put back in its place and all materials have been removed.
